PEBTF and AFL-CIO members show support for striking Walmart workers.

Great news for OURWalmart members and Walmart workers everywhere! A National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) judge ruled in favor of California Walmart workers who were retaliated against for standing up and speaking out for higher wages. The judge found Walmart responsible for a number of unlawful actions against the Our Walmart group – a group backed by the UFCW that organizes Black Friday protests and calls for $15 hourly wages, more full-time positions and an end to illegal workplace intimidation. In a separate case, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled against Walmart in a case that affects nearly 187,000 Walmart workers in Pennsylvania.  These workers are set to receive $151 million in unpaid wages and damages after being forced to work during breaks, off the clock and skip breaks all together.  Another great victory for workers who stand up for their rights and respect in the workplace!  Read the story in the Philadelphia Inquirer here.

Good jobs make strong communities and improve our economy.  This holiday season instead of supporting companies like Walmart and Target who pay employees little more than minimum wage with little or no benefits, consider shopping where workers are paid better and receive good benefits.  When possible, buy products made in America.  By doing so you can help improve our economy and keep Americans working with your holiday spending.

Take action: Show us how you support your community this holiday season when shopping by using the hashtag #AnywhereButWalmart.  Take a picture of yourself in front of or shopping at a store that respects its employees and use the hashtag when uploading it to your social media. Or email your photo to ufcwlocal1776@ufcw1776.org.  The photos we collect will be incorporated into our social media campaign to support workers’ rights and better treatment of workers everywhere.  Show double the support by snapping your photo at a Local 1776 represented retail or grocery store!

Remember to purchase union-made products this holiday season!  Hershey candies, Wise chips & snacks, Citterio Italian specialty meats, Cargill meats, Empire Kosher Poultry, Knouse fruit products, Hanover vegetables and JBS beef products are all made by your fellow Local 1776 members right here in Pennsylvania!
