President Trump's DACA Announcement
Posted On: Sep 06, 2017
To our UFCW Local 1776 Family:
After rumors swirled over the weekend, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke out yesterday and officially announced President Trump's decision to rescind the Obama-era DACA Executive Order. DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) was put in place in 2012 by the Obama administration, and currently protects some 800,000 individuals in the United States.
The 'Dreamers' that DACA protects have lived in the United States since they were children. President Obama gave these people hope, enabled them to reside legally in our country as neighbors, friends, and co-workers. They have worked hard to be law-abiding, tax paying, family supporting residents, promised by our government that they would be protected in our country if they came forward and followed certain protocols.
Yesterday, President Trump delivered a blow to these people and took that protection and security away. President Trump's actions go against the foundation our country was built on and we will fight to ensure that his immoral decision to tear families apart is not passed easily. President Trump's disregard for the individuals in this country that were brought here as children, who know no other home than the United States is alarming and must be met with resistance from all sides.
President Trump has made his decision, but our fight has just begun. We still have an opportunity to shut down this low blow. It is up to our Congress members now to protect the Dreamers and keep them in the country they call home by passing the bipartisan DREAM Act introduced by US Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). It is up to the American people to rally, peacefully protest, and show the Trump Administration that this decision is not supported.
I urge you to contact your Congress members and tell them to pass this important legislation to protect the Dreamers here in the United States. Now is the time to take action, to use your voice, to demand Congress take action against Trump's poor decision to rescind DACA.
