Acme to cut jobs of 400 Local 1776 part-timers
Thursday, April 28, 2011 – In a meeting held today, Acme Markets reported that it will eliminate the jobs of 400 Local 1776 members. This will be part of a 905-job reduction company-wide.
The company said that the last day of work will be May 7 for those losing their jobs. Affected members of Local 1776 are all part time workers and the breakdown is as follows: 200 clerks and 200 customer service attendants.
The Union’s contract calls for layoffs to be done by inverse order of seniority. Wendell W. Young, IV, President of UFCW Local 1776 said that In today’s meeting Acme officials informed him that they would provide a list of store locations and a list of the names of those to receive layoff notices, tomorrow, Friday, April 29th.
Attached is a copy of the official correspondence that was distributed today by Acme, to the Local. As additional information becomes available it will be released immediately. As soon as the Union receives the list of stores and members affected the Union Representatives of the Local will contact the Shop Stewards. If there are any questions in the interim, all members should contact their Union Representative.
