Privatization: What a mess in Washington State!

The news from Washington State's early experience with liquor store privatization -- it became final on June 1 -- continues to be one disasterous story after another.  The Seattle Times reports most recently (May 26) that prices are going up.  Most unbelievably for those who think that selection would be better under privatization, officials at  the giant retailer Costco say they will stock only 70 different liquor products.  Yes, only 70!   That compares to the more than 30,000 items available at PA's Wine and Spirits shops.  So much for better selection!

The news media in Seattle are reporting that with prices going up in the new private stores, owners are preparing signs to explain why.  Wonder what they will say?  Stay tuned.
