'Resign immediately' over bribery charges, UFCW International President Joe Hansen tells Walmart
April 25, 2012 -- UFCW International President Joe Hansen said today that Walmart's top executives should "resign immediately" because of the emerging bribery scandel in the company's Mexico operations and its efforts to cover-up the wide-spread scheme.
The scandal came to light in an exhaustive story published Sunday by the New York Times. Visit here to read it. Hansen said the NYT's investigation "exposed a widespread pattern of Walmart executives bribing government officials to secure permits to build stores in Mexico, followed by a cover-up led by corporate leaders.'" He added, "The article raises serious questions about whether Walmart has used the same tactics for its expansion in the United States and across the globe."
Wendell W. Young, IV, President of UFCW Local 1776, said that the American public deserves a complete investigation of Walmart's practices.
"For many years we have watched as Walmart opened stores throughout the United States in spite of strong opposition from local communities," Young said. "This latest news raises questions about the tactics the company uses to secure zoning changes and building permits."
