Recorder's Message:

Barbara Johson Elected
Recorder of Local 1776

The Executive Board of Local 1776 at its December 2006 meeting elected Barbara Johnson, a member of the union's staff since 2002, to succeed Michele Kessler as Recorder.

Kessler was elected Secretary-Treasurer to replace Herman Wooden, who retired on December 31

Wendell W. Young, IV, President, said the election of Kessler and Johnson "assures that the officers will continue to broadly represent the geographic composition of the union and the deep experience and knowledge of the retail and industrial jobs held by our members."

Johnson joined the staff of Local 1776 as a representative in 2002.  She was a certified nursing assistant at Berks Heim, the Berks County nursing home, when Local 1776 won an election to represent the home's workers in 1984.  Johnson was a member of the Local's first and subsequent bargaining committees that negotiated with county officials on labor contracts for the Berks Heim workforce.

She served as a Shop Steward and Chief Steward at the home before joining the union staff, and became a member of Local 1776's Executive Board in 1988.

Johnson is active in the labor movement in Berks County, serving as a delegate and trustee on the Berks County Labor Council of the AFL-CIO.
