Giant Eagle and UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State Reach Tentative Contract Agreement
Updated On: Aug 13, 2018
PITTSBURGH (JULY 16 2018) After months of serious and deliberate contract negotiations, Giant Eagle and United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1776 Keystone State announced they have reached a tentative, but mutually beneficial contract agreement. Giant Eagle, a Pittsburgh-based food, fuel and pharmacy retailer with over 400 locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland has been in negotiations since the spring with the union. UFCW Local 1776 KS represents over 30,000 members, including supermarket workers across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and New York.
This tentative agreement, if approved by the members of Giant Eagle, stands to increase both starting rates for new members as well as pay for all current members, while maintaining a generous benefits structure. This latest tentative agreement comes with approval from both sides of the bargaining table, including a unanimous endorsement from the union rank-and-file bargaining committee.
“This is a great effort from the new Local 1776 KS bargaining committee and Giant Eagle,” said UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State president, Wendell Young IV. “Our main goal was to build on the foundation put in place in the most recent contract, improving wages and other items most important to our members. I believe we have done that here.”
Local 1776 KS represents 4,500 Giant Eagle members who serve Pittsburgh customers in 35 Giant Eagle locations. Negotiations between Giant Eagle and Local 1776 KS began in May and wrapped up final negotiations in the pre-dawn hours of July 13th.
“We are thrilled to extend our longstanding partnership with Local 1776 Keystone State, formerly UFCW Local 23,” said Dan Shapira, Giant Eagle Special Counsel. “Our Team Members are the lifeblood of Giant Eagle, and we believe this new agreement puts those working in our Pittsburgh area stores in the best position to continue providing high-quality service to our customers.”
Giant Eagle members are set to vote on the tentative union contract within the next several weeks. If approved by the majority of the membership, a new, three-year agreement will be ratified, retroactive to July 1st, 2018, covering all 35 corporate-owned Giant Eagle supermarket locations in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia served by Local 1776 KS.
A contract ratification meeting will be held in the coming weeks, with all parties hopeful for a majority approval from Giant Eagle members.
