    Dear UFCW 1776KS Member,

Last night, the Democratic party made history by formally nominating US Senator Kamala Harris for Vice President. Senator Harris is the first Black woman as well as the first Indian-American woman to be nominated on a major party ticket.

The daughter of immigrants, Kamala Harris embodies the American Dream. A graduate of Howard University, one of our country’s historically Black colleges, Harris served as an assistant district attorney before being elected San Francisco District Attorney. Kamala Harris served as California’s Attorney General before being elected to the US Senate in 2016.

As a US Senator, Kamala Harris has consistently stood up for working people: she has maintained a 100% AFL-CIO labor voting record. But don’t take my word for it, here is what Senator Harris had to say earlier this month in an op-ed she wrote with UFCW International President Marc Perrone on the need to restore hazard pay for grocery store workers:

The simple fact is that grocery store workers are putting their lives on the line every day that they walk into the store. They work hard. They work long hours. And they need to support their families just like all of us do.

For these brave men and women who continue to be on the frontlines of this crisis, our country should demand nothing less.

Further, Senator Harris penned a letter in May urging Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell to establish a new fund to support ALL frontline essential workers, like our members here at UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State. This fund would help our members afford medical, transportation, child care and other costs that are an unforeseen result of Covid-19.

I’m excited that our union’s rank and file member Executive Board has endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket. We have a chance to elect a President and Vice President who will put our members first. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will fight for more hazard pay for essential workers, paid leave for those who are impacted by Covid-19, increased health and safety protections for all essential workers and finally a White House that eliminates the chaos that has been created by the current Trump Administration.

Senator Kamala Harris is much needed in a time where we need unity in our country. Systematic racism, discrimination and hate are all too real in our society. Biden-Harris is the ticket that will unite us and provide real leadership for the women and men our union represents. Let’s break this glass ceiling and make history together.

    Yours in solidarity,

    Wendell Young, IV

    President
