    Updated On: Aug 24, 2022

We are pleased to announce that Leonard Purnell our Director of Field Services and the Cannabis/Healthcare Division has been elected by your Executive Board to serve as Recorder of UFCW Local 1776.

Leonard began his career at the local back in 1992 when he participated in our internship program, he became an official staff member shortly after. Over the years he has held several different positions on staff including Organizer, Servicing Representative, Field Services Representative and Strategic Programs Coordinator before assuming his current role. During his time here Leonard has helped lead numerous successful traditional, internal, and community based organizing campaigns that have helped grow and protect the jobs of our members. Through these campaigns he has also fought to protect ALL workers’ rights to be treated with dignity, respect, and ensure their voices are heard in the workplace, despite today’s anti-workers environment.

Leonard is a long-time member of the Executive Board of Local 1776, a trustee on the UFCW 1776 and Participating Employees Health & Welfare, Retirement & Saving Plan and Legal Trust Funds. He is also a board member on the UFCW Minority Coalition, and currently serves on the Executive Council of the PA AFL-CIO. Recently, Leonard was appointed to the Trustees Committee of the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans and serves as the Chairman of the UFCW & Employers National Workforce Development Trust Fund.

Before interning at UFCW Local 1776, Leonard attended Lincoln University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in English / Communications. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Union Leadership Program at Cornell University. In 2007 and 2015 Leonard was named UFCW Region 2 Local Union Organizer of the year.

We are confident that Leonard will continue his great work and serve our membership well as he assumes the role of Recorder.
