Good Stewards – the backbone of Local 1776 KS and all effective unions
*If you are a Local 1776 KS Steward, log-in to our website for important documents and useful information
Good Stewards are the backbone of an effective union. They reach out to new members and help educate them on their rights. They serve as a bridge between elected union leadership and workers on the job. They listen to co-workers and provide a welcoming, confidential way for members to raise their ideas and concerns.
Most importantly, a Steward inspires, leads and builds a sense of unity and solidarity among the wide range of the 33,000 workers in our union.
All union members have a right to have their Steward present with them during meetings that they feel might be disciplinary in nature. In 1975, in the case National Labor Relations Board vs. J. Weingarten, Inc., the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the right of employees to have union representation present with them during investigatory interviews. Since that case involved a clerk being investigated by the Weingarten Company, these rights have become known as “Weingarten rights.”
If a union member is called into a meeting with a manager and starts to feel nervous that things might take a disciplinary turn, the member has the right to stop the meeting and request the meeting be resumed when his or her Union Steward is present. Steward's Handbook
