  • UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State Endorses Joe Biden for President of the United States!
    Posted On: Sep 16, 2019

To all UFCW 1776 Keystone State members:

After receiving feedback from our members, evaluating the entire field of presidential candidates and having a robust discussion amongst your rank-and-file elected UFCW 1776 Keystone State Executive Board, the Executive Board overwhelmingly decided to endorse a candidate for President of the United States.

After much conversation, that candidate is Joe Biden.

Let me begin by saying I personally believe, as does your Executive Board, that there is an incredible field of candidates running for President. Many of them are extremely qualified and would make amazing leaders dedicated to enacting pro-worker policies that strengthen workers’ rights, improve wages and empower workers ability to join and form a union.

With that said, we looked at some key factors in making this endorsement:

    1. We wanted feedback from our membership. We did an informal phone survey where members could respond to their preferences on who they would like to be president of the United States. The two big takeaways were:
      1. A majority of our members want to elect a Democrat and want to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
      2. A plurality of those members selected Joe Biden as their preferred candidate for President of the United States.
    2. We provided a summary of polling information to our Executive Board on where the race stands and who is most likely to beat Trump. All the data that currently exists overwhelmingly shows Joe Biden is best positioned to defeat Trump.
    3. We asked for our Executive Board rank-and-file members – who are elected to represent all of our members in the various sectors and regions they work in – to provide feedback to see if it matched the results of our informal survey. The discussion did in fact mirror what we previously gathered.

With those factors in mind, our Executive Board overwhelmingly voted to endorse Joe Biden for President. I thank our Executive Board and our membership for their insights and feedback through this process.

Now, let me tell you about the Joe Biden I know and what he means for workers.

First, Joe Biden is invested in Pennsylvania and our surrounding states. He’s invested in our members, the work they do, and the communities they live in. Joe Biden will always advocate for your right to collectively bargain to secure fair wages, health care and retirement security. A good indicator of this is Biden’s selection of Philadelphia, PA as his campaign headquarters.

VP Biden’s number one priority is rebuilding the middle class. Too much of government favors the wealthy 1% and corporations who receive tax breaks that workers can’t even dream of seeing. The middle class continues to shrink, and the wealth gap continues the grow. Biden’s record has always been about giving every citizen a fair shot, regardless of race, gender, religion or sexual orientation to a real, family-sustaining jobs. Biden calls this the “basic bargain”; that if you work hard in America, you should be able to share in the success of what your work helps accomplish. That’s the leadership our country needs.

Joe Biden believes health insurance is a right; that workers should have access to the skills and education they need to advance their careers and livelihoods; that anyone who works full-time in the US should be able to provide for their family; and our democracy, which is under attack, is strong and works for all of our members.

I, and your Executive Board, believe Joe Biden is the best candidate to represent the views and values of our membership. He is the best candidate to put power back in the worker’s hands and help strengthen your right to fair wages, strong health care and retirement security. And finally, he is the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, which is the most important thing workers in our country need right now.

UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State is proud to announce this endorsement and looks forward to working with Vice President Biden.

    In solidarity,

    Wendell Young IV,

    President, UFCW Local 1776KS
